Want to write and publish your first romance story this weekend?
This prompt will get you there.
In less than 1-hour you'll have a complete novelette ready for editing, with your choice of storylines, character dynamics, and writing styles. It’s the perfect length to test your idea before committing to a full length novel.
Then whenever you’re ready, you can publish your story as a one-hour romance read on Amazon and start collecting reader feedback.
A novelette is long enough to tell a complete love story, but short enough to write in a weekend.
It's a short story with room to breathe.
At 7,500 words, you hit that sweet spot where you can develop real character chemistry and deliver a satisfying romantic arc without getting lost in the complexity of a novel.
Here's where it fits relative to other fiction lengths:
Short Story: 1,000-7,500 words
Novelette: 7,500-17,500 words ← Your target
Novella: 17,500-40,000 words
Novel: 40,000+ words
You can publish a novelette on its own or as a series of shorter works.
Check out Amazon Original Stories for example titles all under 10,000 words.
The best way to learn how to do this is to write one yourself. Which is exactly what we’re going to do next. But we’re going to avoid the overthinking trap, and plow through a first draft with the help of a fiction writing consultant (aka Claude).
I used this prompt to write "Emergency Contact" - a romance novelette that took 45 minutes to draft
Here’s exactly how to do it:
The One-Hour Romance Prompt
This is a MEGA prompt.
It walks you through writing a romance novellete in 8 key steps:
Concept Generation
Writing Style Selection
Character Development
Scene Outline
Scene Writing
Romantic Tension Enhancement
Scene Transitions
Final Assembly
I recommend Claude for this task.
The reason is Claude creates an artifact for each scene in your story, which makes it easy to assemble your book when you’re done writing. I'll share the prompt at the end of this post, but it's designed to be copied and pasted as a single unit. If you need help turning on the Artifacts feature, click here for help.
Here's how it works:
Copy the entire prompt (between the START and END markers)
Start a new chat with Claude
Paste in the complete prompt
When Claude asks if you want to begin, simply respond with "Yes"
Let’s walk through it.
Step 1: Brainstorm Your Story Concept
Claude will present you with 5 different romance concepts, each with:
A one-sentence hook
The central conflict
The emotional tone
Why it works as a novelette
Choose the concept that speaks to you most.
The first time you do this, I recommend you move fast. Get a feel for how the prompt works. It takes less than 30 minutes to finish. Then on your second iteration you can spend more time giving the AI feedback and writing the story you want to write.
For example, when I tested this system, one concept was about an artist who keeps having medical emergencies and the doctor she lists as her emergency contact. Love is in the air!
Step 2: Choose Your Voice
Once you've chosen your concept, Claude will write the opening in three different styles:
